What makes our wheels turn. . .

"History informs, inspires, and defines us. It opens us to new ideas,
offers us new perspectives, and brings us closer to the future we long to create."

We are a group of Mead area residents who are passionate about saving the rich history of Mead and the surrounding historic communities. Our mission statement tells it all:

"The Mead Area Historical Society’s mission is to provide stewardship for the Mead, Colorado, and surrounding community’s significant history by nurturing respectful discovery, preservation, collection, and education."

We are organized exclusively for educational and historic purposes and encourage the teaching of local history as well as promoting the care and perpetuation of our community’s historic legacy.

We are a 501(c)3 IRS designated charity. Your donations maybe tax deductible.

How we came about

In the spring of 2021, several Mead area community members realized a growing need for a historical society in our area that encompasses our whole community, and not  just a small part. Thus, the Mead Area Historical Society was born.

Our goal is to work together with community members, other area historical societies, and local non-profits to preserve the rapidly vanishing history of our area.

Our focus is not just on the Town of Mead itself, but also of the many small communities that once surrounded the present town. These include, but are not exclusive to, Highlandlake, Mount Zion, Liberty Hall, and Pearl Howett. Today, most of these communities/villages, either have been absorbed by Mead or have disappeared altogether.

We are working with History Colorado to develop a historic plaque program, a possible historic district, and helping property owners apply to see if their historic properties are eligible for listing in the National Registry of Historic Places.

We now have our own 501(c)3 non-profit status with the IRS. We are so excited to be starting this next chapter in our quest to save the rich and amazing history of our Mead area. To donate please go here.
